Bistrik tower – Observatory
Category : Sights
Also known as Bistrik Tower, another beautiful but sad story about Sarajevo’s history.
Built as a military fortification during the Austro-Hungarian empire on a high point of Trebević mountain, with an amazing view of the entire city, after World War II, the tower lost its military importance. In the 1960s, it was rented by the Orion Astronomical Society, which formed the only astronomical observatory in BiH between 1969 and 1972.
The institute reconstructed the old fort and added two domes with instruments for observing the sky. Short after,a special observatory was built next to the old fort which had a third dome 8 meters in diameter. The observatory was well equipped and the astronomers could stay in for several days, it also contained a library and a photo lab.
During the last war the forts were severely damaged and hasn’t been reconstructed since.
